작품설명(‘ Moment by Moment’ series)

            

저의 주요설치 중의 하나인 ‘ Moment by Moment’ series는 우리나라 제사예식에서, 제단 쌓는 것에서 착안된 작품입니다.  작품의 부 제목은 ‘Homage to my Parents’로 16개의 piles로 구성되었고, 크기는 장소에 따라 달라질 수 있습니다. 벽에 걸린 drawings은’Calendar Project ‘의 일부로서, 우리나라달력(즉 5행과 일, 월 포함)을 먹으로 화선지에 그린 것입니다. 80년의 달력으로 저의 부모님께서 사셨던 날들을 상징적으로 기록해 보고자 시도했습니다.  그 piles위에 놓인 objects는 일종의 공물(offerings)을 상징 한 것입니다.  그 동안 나의 것을 찾으려는 의도 들, 즉 ritual한 면, 여성-어머니의 feministic 한 면, 또한 자연의 신비를 찾으려는 노력들을 다 보여주는 설치입니다.

저는 그 동안 다양한 혼합재료(나무, 석고, resin, 고무, 유리, 금속 등)를 이용하여 조각, 설치, drawing작업을 해오고 있습니다.  설치의 많은 부분은 한국의 장례, 저의 부모님의 제사: 정성을 다한 제단의 음식의 종류와 그 위치 등, 차례의 격식과 순서, 감정의 이입 등에서 많은 영감을 받았습니다. 저는 이런 모든 과정을 상징적으로 질서 있게 작품에서 표현하고 싶었습니다. 또 한가지 제 작업의 주제는, 이런 성인들의 심각한 예식과 어린아이들의 유희, 소꿉놀이 에서의 공통된 측면입니다.

반면 저의 조각에서는 보다 더 구체적으로 건축적인 요소가 가미되며, 설치작업에서 볼 수 있는ritual (예식)적인 것 외에, 예전에 물을 찾을 때 썼다던 수맥막대기(divining rod)를, 저와 자연을 이어주는 매체의 상징으로, 유기적인 형태로, 때로는 나뭇가지로 보여지고 있습니다.

요즘에   저는 작가로서 참으로 특수한voice가 있다는 생각이 듭니다.  한국의 문화 배경에서 자라나 대학을 마치자, 곧 New York에서 대학원을 나와30여 년을, 과연 내가 누구인가를 늘 생각하지 않을 수 밖에 없는 여건이, 작가인 저에게는 중요한 condition(여건)이 된 것 같습니다.

Artist Statemen

Mikyung Kim

Much of the inspiration for my work comes from the ritual ceremonies that I experienced in my childhood in Korea.

My concerns stem from the entire ceremonial experience.  What draw my imagination to these events are the intense emotional experience, the symbolic positioning, the mathematical progressions and the significance of the liberation of the spirit. Roles, feelings, games, colors, religious choices, altar settings, narration and historical influences affect the time-space process of my intentions. My work should always be viewed as in a transition from an object to a system of processes. The reasoning behind this is based on the ceremonial relations between people and the components of the environment.

 

My own ideas are that the ritual process (creation of ritual/game) is my single most important creative function, which endeavors to clarify and expand upon the ideology of the “ceremony of life and death.”
