Shin, Cheol : Self-Consciousness of Existence, Being Full of Consciousness and Happiness

Self-Consciousness of Existence, Being Full of Consciousness and Happiness

Written by Yang Geon Yeol (Ph.D of philosophy, a researcher at Culture & Tourism Institute)
Chil Shin has pursued his works of nature, human and life in an individual and unique style, and is scheduled to hold his 20th private exhibition with a subject "Encounter with Strangeness." The forthcoming exhibition will display his recent works characterized by the beauty of humorous and humble shape.
The world of his creative works has continued over 30 years and is a series of novelty. All of his works are new pictures and has been never experienced. His heart flutters whenever he stands in front of empty canvas. His artistic world has been so all the time, and his life is the same. When he should prefer stability in his career, he decided to work as a professional artist. His passion for art seems unlucky from the viewpoint of secular world. The more unlucky it is, however, the more brilliant his work is.
His works started from the "search for pure beauty of shape" concentrating on the language and grammar of painting, and passed through the "extension of painting expressions" highlighted by visual humor and wit. Appreciators are led to the world of free imagination and amusement by the formative language of his works created during this time, such as texture, color, material and symbol which have the intrinsic value.
Meaningful change has appeared in his recent work from mid-2000s. He has closely encountered the ordinary world in image deformation, canvas/space configuration since he paid attention to the context of artistic work. During this time, his life and works integrated into one body.
His creative life has never been loose, but he pushed himself to realize new artistic world. His works stays where his struggle with himself just reveals itself, and doesn't go further. However, there is no hesitation. His works accomplished in such a way wakes the mystery of existence in us. A series of his works don't miss or isn't regretful of the past days, and is the excitement for the forthcoming future.
It seems that his long-standing inquiry of art is being solved. His works to be introduced in the forthcoming event show his consciousness of existence and contain the happiness and fullness of his consciousness as an artist.

Search for pure shape, and esthetics of compression and self-control
His works look simple. But it is not true in consideration of the trace of his agony. The process through which he has sought for such image required to create shape is a supporting evidence. The ability to compress shape makes the value of his existence great as an artist. Moreover, the trace looks beautiful.
Seen here and there in his studio are a number of the rough sketches transforming the real image into painting language and grammar. The shapes created through deformation and distortion reveal a sense of such compressed existence. Such traces remained during the creative process are a part of art. And I firmly believe that such small pieces of fragmentary thought have the esthetic value themselves.
Various shapes appear in his recent works such as figures, trees, flowers, birds, automobiles, clothes, houses, fashion style and situations and even specific behavior. The geometric and unrealistic symbols have been replaced by concrete shapes seen every where. These shapes are naturally born through basic work, coloring, texturing and spatial arrangement.
His works have become further clarified as familiar shapes have appeared in the canvas. They form relation with one another in a canvas, and offers various visual messages. At the same time, the canvas denies the real restrictions and discrimination in space and time providing appreciators with a place to give full play to their imagination.
His pictures compressively show the time and space through which he has lived. In the meantime, the secret world of an individual delivers the meaning of a full life common among all of his contemporaries.
His works also show the entire process, in an abstained manner, through which the unidentified existence under prevailing chaos finally identifies itself. Understanding of the creation and immortality embraces all the lives, and turns its affectionate, joyful eyes upon all existences in the world.

Various transfigurations of pure shape
This pure shapes created by him are firm and dignified, gain life and try to escape the canvas into the world. It is possible as each of them is a unique vitalized one. They walk into the world of cultural work, music, performance, fashion and even screen, and are so pure as to harmonize with them there. His shapes ca be transfigured as various cultural contents with no restriction not as a mere illustration but as a mutually supporting agent.
It is the uniqueness of the painting and is a potential to equally exchange with other genre. Though they are mixed with each other, one doesn't dominate the other nor sacrifice itself for the other.

His painting doesn't try to escape the life. As he has experienced that art hardly expels life, his shape has got simple and his paintings have had more space. However, he couldn't realize that the space in paintings is hardly conquerable until he understood that the seriousness of life doesn't allow the full space in the canvas. As a result, the space is not void nor filled.
The space in his works is his pure mind to communicate with the world to realize beauty. If hearts of appreciators are touched by his mind to make the world beautiful, his work will encounter the world once again.

His works are neither prideful nor boastful, but reveal their existence. They exclude decoration and rid themselves of greed in order to encounter the humble beauty in life.
His consciousness of existence eliminates sorrow and loneliness, and keeps sympathy. It deletes the voidness of creation/extinction and recognizes hope and happiness. He overcomes the limit of the helpless individuals in the world through his painting.
It is the task given to us to fill the space in the canvas, which he couldn't do, isn't it?
It's truly a blessing to fill the space of our lives even for a moment while appreciating the free beauty expressed in his works.
