Hoe, Jung hwa

Memories of Utopia
Latest Works of Hoe, Jung hwa

Kim, Bok young(Art critic)

As An Kyun had done earlier, Huh, Jung hwa showed this attempt in the piece of four seasons and eight famous spots in 2003. After that, it went on to , , , and to the latest work .
The materials for the latest pieces are mostly drawn out from nature immanent in her memories and historical items aforementioned. These are processed as silhouette images of color ink-sticks from the least emphasis, light and shade of short luminosity, and vague dye. By magnanimously omitting the details of objects, nearly all are transposed to clean non-figuratif color surfaces, and stillness of a sea level is created by actively using embossing and matiere which the property of Korean paper has. With the colors of the five directions as the key, blotting out the borders, reiteration, contradictory combination, a chance juxtaposition of figuratif and non-figuratif, and strokes of automatism are vertically and horizontally scattered, arousing the multiplicity of meaning.
Huh Jung-hwa’s latest works have the significance in appropriating the preexisting images, texts and symbols wholly into her own method. She raises her own canvas through opening and dissolving a single interconnection by consciously establishing the gap among images. Those are not something that has been seen before somewhere. Gyum Jae’s Jin Gyoung, patchwork cloth of Joseon Dynasty, the grid, pottery, calligram with Chinese writing, curves, the colors of the five directions, LED, multi-culture that reaches Mark Rothko, and multi-texts are consciously appearing, opening and connecting their gaps and creating its own text. This is what is an ‘intertextual’ concept. This peerage is one of the quiet but bold attempts for our modern Korean paintings to survive in the globalism period.
The artist ultimately talks about the dream of loss in our time. Those are lost, therefore not existing now. All things in absence are called from the imaginary world and connected to reality, speaking of the aspiration for romance we can never reach in reality. She draws the memory of Utopia. Her latest works imaginatively restores Utopia in reality, which modern people has lost. This is the way in which Huh Jung-hwa’s latest works are fascinating.
