Artist’s Statement 2012


최근에 이루어지고 있는 나의 작업에서의 중요한 요소는 color 그 자체이다. Stripe양식으로 수 없이 중첩되어 지는 ‘색’들은 그것들 스스로 충돌하고 또한 어울리며 조화를 이룬다. 얇게 계속하여 입혀 가는 끝없는 붓질 속에서 드러나는 색깔들은 더 이상 내가 의도한 그 색이 아니다. 그것들은 스스로 생동하고 변화하며 발색한다. 숨겨지는 color도 보여지는 color도, 그 어느 것 하나도 독자적인 자신만의 색을 발하지 않고 서로의 관계속에서 어우러진 독특한 색채를 드러낸다.
이전의 작업에서 보여졌던 color는 한가지의 색이 수십번 중복되어 겹쳐 채색되는 과정에서 오히려 더 다양하고 깊은 색감을 나타내었다. 겉으로 드러난 하나의 단순한 색상이 아닌 그 밑에 깔려있는 여러 다른 색들로 인해 무어라 단정 지을 수 없는 미묘한 색조의 변화를 보여 주었다. 반면에 최근 나의 작품에서의 color들은 화면에 나타난 그 다양함에도 불구하고 color들 자체의 대립과 융합 속에서 마치 합창과도 같은 하나의 화음을 만들어 낸다.
New York에서의 작품활동중에서 color는 작가로서 나의 정체성을 나타 낼 수 있는 훌륭한 수단이었다. 다양한 인종과 문화가 뒤섞여 있으며 또 그만큼 다양한 미술 표현 양식이 난무하는 New York에서 작가로서 나의 존재감을 확립한다는 것은 그리 쉬운 일은 아니었다. 혼란과 갈등속에서 내가 찾은 것은 내게 익숙한 것, 나만이 할 수 있는 작업을 하는 것이 가장 세계적일 수 있다는 사실이었다. 한지(Korean Paper)에 우리의 전통적인 기법으로 표현되어진 색깔들은 어떠한 서양회화재료와 기법에서 발견 할 수 없는 독특한 매력을 보여 주었다. 그것이 내가 New York화단의 한 가운데서 꾸준히 우리 고유의 재료와 기법으로 작업을 해 나간 이유가 되었다.
나의 일관된 관심은 ‘사람’이다. 사람들이 가지는 꿈, 행복에 대한 소망, 그들간의 관계에서 빚어지는 수 많은 감정들, 혹은 현실적인 삶의 문제에 이르기 까지 그들의 내면의 세계와 그 외향적인 모든 것들이 나의 관심사이다. 나의 작업에서 스트라이프 양식으로 나타나는 수 많은 color들과 그 중첩성은 마치 Timeline상에서 끝없이 전개되어 가는 사건과 기억들의 기록과도 같다. 그리고 그것은 관계와 소통을 갈망하는 사람들의 color를 통해 비치어 지는(reflect) 자기 자신들의 지나간 순간의 기억들과 감정들의 은유적 표현일 수도 있을 것이다.

Artist’s Statement 2012
One of the most important elements in my recent work is color itself. Numerous colors piled up in the form of stripes simultaneously contrast and compliment one another, producing harmonious unity. The colors, developed by continuous thin brush strokes, are not what I originally intended. The colors come alive, undergo a metamorphosis, and illuminate by themselves. Any color, regardless of whether it is hidden or exposed, is not highlighted distinctly but rather relates to others revealing a unique color.

Colors from my previous work were also developed with layers upon layers of one color, which later becomes more varied and rich. The many layers of various colors appeared not as a simple color but elusive and intricate subtle changes of all the colors underneath. However, colors from my recent works create harmony like a choir, even though there are numerous colors displayed on the surface. The harmony comes from the contrast and fusion of each color.

While I was working in New York, color was an essential element to explore my identity as an artist. It was never easy for me to discover my true self and my own artistry in New York, a city of many races, diverse cultures, and a great variety of art trends and techniques. After deep inner reflection and an identity crisis, I finally determined not to blindly follow popular trends. Instead, I searched for a unique method of creation which I was familiar with and one only I could develop, a method that was in fact global and international.

Colors of Hanji (Korean Paper) come from Korean traditional techniques, showing an originality and beauty very distinct from Western techniques. This became a great motivation and inspiration for me to continue to develop my own technique in New York based on a Korean traditional method.

My main interest has always been ‘people.' Their dreams, hopes for happiness, relationship conflicts, the various outcomes of feelings, or life problems. Everything involved in a person's internal thoughts and outward actions draw my interest. The diverse colors expressed by stripes in my work are like a record of events and memories endlessly presented on a timeline. People’s desire for relationships and communication is reflected through the colors, which also could be a metaphorical expression of their past memories of moments and emotions.
